1 Kings 17:7-16
The widow’s last meal
The stream where Elijah had been getting water dried up because it had not rained for a long time. So the Lord told Elijah to go to a certain town. When Elijah arrived there, he saw a widow gathering firewood and said to her, “Please give me a drink of water, and could you give me some bread as well?”
The woman answered, “Believe me, I don’t have any bread. All I have left is a handful of flour in a bowl and a little olive oil in a jar. I am gathering firewood to make one last meal for myself and my son before we die.”
“Don’t worry,” Elijah replied. “The bowl will not run out of flour, and the jar will not run out of oil until the Lord sends rain again.” So the widow went and prepared a meal for Elijah, and for as long as the drought lasted, the flour and the oil did not run out.
Who looks after missionaries and evangelists?
Most adults either work for someone or have their own business. They are paid by the company they work for or earn money from their business.
Missionaries and evangelists work for the Lord, so who provides for them? Although the Lord rewards them, they still need food, clothes, and other everyday necessities. Elijah had no money to buy food, yet God already had a plan in place.
God often uses people who have money, food, or other resources to help those who spend their lives telling others about Him. You too can be part of God’s plan to help missionaries! You could give some of your pocket money to missions or donate books, clothes, and other useful items to missionary families.
Verse for today
In the same way, the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should receive their living from the gospel. 1 Corinthians 9:14
